Climate Activism

Go Change Things

Shimna has always produced activists, and environmental activism has always been high on the agenda.

Yes, Eco Warriors tackled litter picking in our grounds and in the local community, but they also campaigned to stop litter being dropped in the first place.

Artistic activism is the way to keep the message alive, and Shimna students have a great record of success in the annual Newry, Mourne and Down Council environmental calendar art competition.

The geography department has always played a major role in active environmental work. Students measure the dunes at Murlough. They monitor our local rivers and even monitored seismic activity!

Students who feel really strongly about climate change and the need for action took every opportunity to raise awareness and to protest. Natasha was a particularly active activist and invested in her slogans on awareness raising posters.

Many students were inspired by Greta Thunberg and headed off for Belfast to take part in the school strikes for climate at the City Hall.

Back at school, protests were also underway.

And when our activists grow up, they carry right on activising. See if you can spot a young V’Cenza out on fieldwork. V’Cenza grew up to be particularly active, both at home in Rostrevor and with Save Our Sperrins!
